Plantar fasciitis, also known as Heel Spur Syndrome, is the most common cause of heel pain in adults. Plantar fasciitis is a degenerative syndrome of the plantar fascia caused by recurring trauma at its origin point.
Causes: In combination with aggravating factors such as uneven terrain, repetitive movement of walking or running can create micro-tears in the plantar fascia, whose main purpose is the correction of irregular walking surfaces and shock absorption. Weight gain, occupation-related activity, anatomical variance, poor biomechanics, overexertion, and inadequate footwear also contribute to the aggravation of PF.
Symptoms: Plantar fasciitis usually presents as pain on the sole of the foot at the bottom of the heel. Patients report the acute and severe pain with the first few steps taken in the morning or after an extended break from weight-bearing activity. The pain can be so sharp that the patient is prompted to limp with the affected heel off the ground. The heel pain decreases over the course of the day and increased number of steps, but will return if significant weight-bearing activity is undertaken. Heel pain may be diffuse or migratory.
Mechanical or accommodative treatments such as taping and orthotics may be beneficial for patients with plantar fasciitis. Your physiotherapist will work through exercises to stretch and strengthen the affected area to correct any associated tendon or muscular sensitivities.
At Pro Fusion Rehab, we would combine ultrasound, electrotherapy, soft tissue massage and joint mobilization to improve healing process. We also supervise the exercises to improve strength, balance and flexibility of the calf muscles. Moreover, we use shockwave therapy to treat chronic heel pain, which has proven to be a very effective treatment for plantar fasciitis while showing long-term success that other treatments cannot boast.
